June 5 – World Environment Day

“The earth is not ours, we are the earth.”

Why a World Environment Day?

-Since June 5, 1973, the United Nations Environment Organization (UNEP), together with the United Nations World Organization (UN), establish and direct this day as the largest global platform for environmental outreach and education and awareness of environmental problems that concern humanity in general.

– The main objective of this program is the participation of governments, companies and citizens in an effort to address the most pressing environmental problems and the actions that allow their mitigation (UNEP, 2022).

– ONE EARTH is the slogan designed for this year, where we hope to achieve profound changes in policies and in our decisions to allow cleaner, greener and more sustainable lives in harmony with nature, inspiring positive changes from different positions and approaches.

Making life sustainable is the main option

The development of sustainable societies in every aspect of life is necessary. Therefore, there must be options that are available, affordable and attractive, but many of these alternatives can only be proposed and implemented by national and local governments, businesses, financial institutions and international organisations. Therefore, the role of individuals and civil society is focused on advocacy, awareness-raising and participation in these programmes.

ACTIONS TO SEEK SUSTAINABILITYEncouraging people to reflect on their consumption.Seeking to get companies to develop greener models.Getting farmers and factories to produce more sustainably.Inspiring teachers and students to take action for change.Moving young people to build a greener near future.

Triple planetary emergency

  1. The climate is warming too fast for humans and nature to adapt.
  2. Habitat loss has led to approximately 1 million species being threatened with extinction.
  3. Pollution continues to poison water, air and soil.

To keep global warming below 1.5°C, annual greenhouse gas emissions must be halved by 2030; otherwise, pollution would increase by 50%.

On the other hand, if strict single-use plastic policies are not implemented, its emission to water sources could triple by 2040. (United Nations, 2021)

How can I get involved in caring for the environment from my company?

● 1.Understand that it really is a commitment to the place where we live and what we will leave to our generations.

● 2.It is not enough to comply with established rules to avoid sanctions; it is necessary to go further and take action for real change.

● 3.Define environmental objectives and implement programs to meet them.

● 4. Reduce energy consumption by replacing lighting or air conditioning equipment with low-cost ones, disconnecting and turning off electronic devices that are not in use. LED technologies help to use less energy and can reduce costs for the company.

● 5. Design correct recycling policies, regardless of the sector you are in, since we all generate waste. Even extending these recycling systems to workers’ homes.

● 6.Have greater resource efficiency, reducing the consumption of stationery, cleaning materials, etc., for only the necessary ones, in this way you will not only be benefiting the planet, but also reducing costs for your brand.

● 7. Minimize the impact we leave behind, encouraging the use of more environmentally friendly means of transport. Also ensuring that the resources and raw materials used have the least possible impact on the environment.

● 8. Take care of the use of water by encouraging responsible consumption.

● 9. Promote policies to reduce single-use plastics.
